He was among the great educators who dedicated most of his life to the intellectual and spiritual development of his students. His personality embodied all the qualities that an ideal mentor should possess. He was a teacher who not only guided his students intellectually and philosophically but also paid particular attention to their moral upbringing.

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi often emphasized that academic success alone is insufficient; a student’s success also depends on their moral education and adherence to human values. In his view, the ultimate goal of knowledge was not merely academic achievement but the enhancement of one’s character and the betterment of society. For this reason, he continuously encouraged his students to strive for excellence not only in their studies but also in their personal conduct.

His teachings emphasized a deep connection between knowledge and ethics. He always reminded his students that a successful individual is one who applies knowledge in daily life and continuously improves their character. His fundamental advice revolved around the concept that the true purpose of knowledge is personal development and moral training, and the most successful person is one who embraces both knowledge and action.

  • Mentorship and Guidance for Students

An important aspect of Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi’s character was his recognition of the importance of contemporary knowledge. He believed that both religious and worldly knowledge were essential for a successful life. His advice constantly urged students to pursue modern knowledge so that they could meet the challenges of their time and contribute meaningfully to society.

1. The Message of Acquiring Knowledge

The first and foremost message Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi imparted to his students was that knowledge is crucial for refining one’s character and setting them on the path to success. He always stressed, drawing upon the teachings of the Quran and Hadith, that seeking knowledge should be the fundamental purpose of one’s life. He frequently quoted the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): *”Seek knowledge, even if it takes you to China, for seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.”* (Al-Bayhaqi, 1421)

He regarded knowledge as vital for human life, likening a life without knowledge to a walking corpse. In today’s materialistic world, where knowledge is often seen as a means to earn a livelihood, he viewed knowledge as essential for the survival of humanity and the elevation of nations. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also said: *”Knowledge is the life of the heart, and actions are the expiation for sins.”* (Mahrizi, 1380).

2. The Value of Time and Opportunity

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi emphasized the importance of time, urging students to make the most of every opportunity. He would often say that without a proper appreciation of time, no one could achieve success. He equated time with life itself, urging students not to trade their lives cheaply. His teachings stressed the fleeting nature of time, likening it to a cloud that passes swiftly and urging students to seize the opportunity for good deeds before they vanish.

In a world where opportunities are often scarce and fleeting, Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi advised that one should take advantage of every opportunity for good, for such opportunities may not come again. He would often remind students that if they failed to act, Allah would find someone else to carry out the task. He believed that it was essential to remain vigilant and seize opportunities when they arise.

3. The Importance of Youth

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi frequently reminded students of the preciousness of youth. He taught that failing to value and utilize youth effectively leads to loss both in this world and the Hereafter. Quoting the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) regarding the questions asked on the Day of Judgment: *”The son of Adam will not move from his place before his Lord until he is asked about five things: about his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth and where he earned it from, how he spent it, and how he acted upon his knowledge.”* (Al-Bayhaqi, 1421), Sheikh Mohsin emphasized the importance of utilizing one’s youth for righteous endeavors.

He believed that youth was the time when one has the energy and strength to engage in worship, seek knowledge, and perform good deeds. He would often say that youth is a priceless asset and wasting it leads to regret.

4. The Role of Discipline and Order

Discipline was another key element of Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi’s teachings. He was a firm believer that success in life is grounded in discipline and order. He consistently urged students to adhere to a structured and disciplined lifestyle. His own practices reflected this belief. For example, he would check on students at night to ensure they were adhering to proper routines, such as going to bed on time, because he understood that a lack of sleep affected academic performance and overall health.

He would often cite Imam Ali (AS), who said: *“I advise you and all those who receive my message to be conscious of Allah, to organize your affairs, and to ensure harmony among yourselves.”* (Al-Sharif al-Radi, 1414). For Sheikh Mohsin, discipline was not just about academic success, but about ensuring balance in all aspects of life.

5. The Importance of Positive Thinking

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi stressed the power of positive thinking. He believed that maintaining a positive outlook in life opens the doors to success and peace of mind. He often told students that a positive mindset illuminates life, while negativity can trap a person in despair. He emphasized that the key to success in life lies in optimism, which provides the motivation and energy needed to overcome obstacles.

6. The Value of Hard Work and Effort

A recurring theme in Sheikh Mohsin’s guidance was the importance of relying on one’s own efforts rather than depending on others. He believed that a person must trust their own abilities and work diligently towards their goals. He often quoted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who said: *“Your job is to strive, and the outcome is in Allah’s hands.”* Sheikh Mohsin would advise students not to expect others to treat them with respect or kindness, but to focus on doing good and being self-sufficient.

7. Living with a Purpose

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi often emphasized the necessity of having a clear life purpose. Drawing upon the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), *“He who lives without a goal is doomed to failure,”* he encouraged students to set goals and strive to fulfill them. For him, a person who lacks purpose in life will never be able to reach their true potential.

8. Living Above Material Desires

Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi taught that one must remain detached from material desires. He would often quote Imam Ali (AS): *“The pleasures of this world are fleeting; true success lies in the Hereafter.”* He believed that students should focus more on spiritual development and not allow worldly desires to dictate their lives.

9. Building Self-Confidence and Character

Self-confidence was another key trait Sheikh Mohsin instilled in his students. He believed that confidence in one’s abilities is essential for overcoming challenges and achieving success.
